In summary, if you hear "marbling in dynamite," it's not a recognized or safe characteristic of commercially produced dynamite. It likely refers to a dangerous, informal, or misunderstood attempt at creating an explosive mixture, or a metaphorical use of the term.
What is Marble?
Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of **carbonate minerals**, most commonly calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) or dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO₃)₂). It forms when limestone (or dolostone) is subjected to intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth's crust. This process causes the original carbonate minerals to recrystallize, forming a denser, interlocking crystalline structure that gives marble its characteristic appearance.
Marble is highly valued for its aesthetic qualities, including its wide range of colors and unique veining patterns, which are due to impurities present during its formation (e.g., clay minerals, iron oxides, graphite). It's commonly used in architecture, sculpture, countertops, flooring, and decorative elements.
How is Marble Associated with Fire?
While marble itself is **non-combustible and won't catch fire, it does react to high temperatures and prolonged exposure to fire in specific ways, primarily due to its chemical composition and physical properties:
1. Heat Resistance: Marble is generally considered heat-resistant, which is why it's often used around fireplaces, for countertops, and in other applications where some heat exposure is expected. It can withstand typical kitchen heat from hot pots and pans without damage, provided it's not exposed to direct flames for extended periods.
2. Thermal Decomposition (Calcination): The primary association of marble with fire comes from its decomposition at high temperatures. When marble (calcium carbonate) is exposed to extremely high temperatures, typically above 825°C (1517°F), it undergoes a chemical reaction called **calcination**. In this process, the calcium carbonate breaks down, releasing carbon dioxide gas (CO₂) and forming calcium oxide (CaO), also known as "quicklime."
$$CaCO_3(s) \xrightarrow{\text{heat}} CaO(s) + CO_2(g)$$
This reaction is historically significant because quicklime is a key ingredient in cement and other building materials.
3. Structural Integrity Loss: During calcination, the marble loses its structural integrity. It becomes more brittle, crumbly, and prone to cracking, spalling (flaking off in layers), and discoloration. In a house fire, while the marble won't ignite, the intense and prolonged heat can cause it to degrade and lose its strength, which can be a safety concern if it's part of a load-bearing structure.
4. Thermal Shock: Like many natural stones, marble can be susceptible to **thermal shock** if exposed to rapid and extreme temperature changes. For example, if a very hot object is placed directly on a cold marble surface, or if it experiences sudden cooling after being heated, the uneven expansion and contraction can lead to cracks or fractures.
In summary, marble doesn't burn like wood, but it chemically decomposes and loses its structural integrity at high temperatures, making its interaction with fire a matter of chemical breakdown and physical degradation rather than combustion.

Bezpieczeństwo to dziś nie wybór – to konieczność. Polska, jako kraj leżący na wschodniej flance UE oraz NATO, dostrzega zagrożenia, ale jednocześnie widzi szanse płynące ze wspólnego działania. Dynamite Moon Magazine X Marble
A classic marble cake is a delightful combination of vanilla and chocolate batters swirled together to create a beautiful, "marbled" effect. Here's a common and delicious recipe for a moist and tender marble cake, often baked in a Bundt pan or as layers.
Classic Marble Cake Recipe
This recipe aims for a tender crumb and distinct vanilla and chocolate flavors.
**Yields:** 12-16 servings
**Prep time:** 30 minutes
**Cook time:** 50-60 minutes
**Ingredients:**
**For the Vanilla Cake Batter:**
* 2 ½ cups (300g) all-purpose flour, sifted
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* ½ teaspoon salt
* 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
* 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
* 4 large eggs, room temperature
* 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
* 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk, room temperature
**For the Chocolate Batter:**
* ¼ cup (22g) unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed for a darker color and milder flavor, or natural for a more intense chocolate flavor)
* ¼ cup (60ml) hot water or hot coffee (coffee enhances chocolate flavor)
* ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar (optional, if you want a sweeter chocolate portion)
**Instructions:**
**1. Prepare the Pan and Preheat Oven:**
* Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
* Generously grease and flour a 10-12 cup Bundt pan, or two 8 or 9-inch round cake pans. Ensure all nooks and crannies of the Bundt pan are coated. For round pans, line the bottoms with parchment paper as well.
**2. Make the Vanilla Cake Batter:**
* In a medium bowl, whisk together the sifted flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
* In a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment), beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy, about 2 minutes.
* Gradually add the granulated sugar to the butter and beat on medium-high speed for 3-5 minutes, until the mixture is light and fluffy and pale in color. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
* Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated.
* Stir in the vanilla extract.
* With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the dry ingredients mixture and the buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined after each addition. **Do not overmix!** Overmixing will develop the gluten and result in a tough cake.
**3. Create the Chocolate Batter:**
* Transfer about 2 cups (approximately 1/3 to 1/2) of the vanilla cake batter to a separate medium bowl.
* In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, hot water/coffee, and optional sugar until smooth and no lumps remain.
* Pour the cocoa mixture into the reserved portion of vanilla batter. Gently fold until just combined and evenly colored.
**4. Assemble the Marble Cake:**
* Spoon alternating dollops of vanilla batter and chocolate batter into your prepared cake pan.
* Once all the batter is in the pan, take a knife or a skewer and gently swirl through the batters a few times to create the marbled effect. Be careful not to over-swirl, or the colors will blend too much and you'll lose the distinct marbling. A few figure-eight motions or gentle S-shapes are usually enough.
**5. Bake the Cake:**
* Bake for 50-60 minutes for a Bundt cake, or 30-35 minutes for two 8 or 9-inch layers, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached.
* **Important:** Do not overbake, as this will result in a dry cake.
**6. Cool the Cake:**
* Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15-20 minutes.
* Carefully invert the cake onto the wire rack to cool completely before frosting or serving. If using layer pans, run a knife around the edges before inverting.
**7. Optional Frosting/Glaze (Classic Chocolate Ganache or Vanilla Buttercream):**
**Simple Chocolate Glaze:**
* ½ cup (85g) chocolate chips (semi-sweet or bittersweet)
* 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
* 2 tablespoons milk or cream
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for sweetness/thickness)
**Instructions for Glaze:**
1. Combine chocolate chips, butter, and milk/cream in a microwave-safe bowl.
2. Heat in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well after each, until melted and smooth.
3. Stir in vanilla extract. If desired, whisk in powdered sugar until desired consistency and sweetness are reached.
4. Pour or drizzle over the cooled cake.
**Tips for Success:**
* **Room Temperature Ingredients:** Ensure your butter, eggs, and buttermilk are at room temperature. This helps them emulsify properly, resulting in a smoother batter and a more tender cake.
* **Measure Flour Correctly:** Spoon the flour into your measuring cup and then level it off with a straight edge. Don't scoop directly from the bag, as this can compact the flour and lead to a dry cake.
* **Don't Overmix:** Mix the batter only until just combined after adding the dry ingredients. Overmixing develops gluten, making the cake tough.
* **Swirl Gently:** Less is more when it comes to marbling. Over-swirling will combine the batters too much and you won't get distinct swirls.
* **Adjust Chocolate Intensity:** If you prefer a stronger chocolate flavor, you can melt 1-2 oz of unsweetened or semi-sweet chocolate and add it to your cocoa mixture.
* **Storage:** Store marble cake at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week. It also freezes well (unfrosted) for up to 2-3 months.
Enjoy your beautiful and delicious homemade marble cake!
