ZODIAC CIPHERS
The FBI's San Francisco division and local law enforcement partners continue to investigate the Zodiac Killer case
In 2020, the FBI announced that a cipher attributed to the Zodiac Killer was solved by private citizens.
The letters were postmarked in San Francisco and Pleasanton.
Some letters contained cryptograms.
Two of the cryptograms have been solved.
The Zodiac Killer sent letters and ciphers to the media and law enforcement from 1969 to 1974. The letters were often misspelled and began with "This is the Zodiac speaking". The Zodiac signed his letters with a symbol that resembled gunsight crosshairs
The letters were eventually cracked by amateur and professional cryptographers, including those at the FBI
The killer threatened to kill more people if the letters weren't published in full, on the front page
The killer threatened to blow up a school bus
The letters ended with a symbol of a circle with a cross through it, which became known as the Zodiac Killer's symbol
The letters included unreleased details and evidence from the crime scenes
The letters included a complex cipher that the killer claimed was the key to identifying him
..sent to local media outlets, including the Vallejo Times-Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, and San Francisco Examiner..
