Sigiriya in Sri Lanka is an ancient fortress - it was built by King Kashyapa around 477 AD when the king made Sigiriya into his capital city. It was later converted into Buddhist monastery.
The name Sigiriya translates into Lion Rock because the fortress consists of a Lion Gate - an entrance flanked by Lion paws.
Today it is a popular tourist destination where you hike to the citadel. The last few steps take you past the lion gate to magnificent views of the surroundings.
I really enjoyed our visit there - it was one of the high points of our Sri Lanka trip
