An arrow struck him while he besieged a castle, and though he pulled it free, infection set in. As he lay dying, he forgave the archer who had shot him, showing the nobility that even his fiercest enemies had come to respect.
He was born in 1157 at Oxford, son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He quickly became a local lord in Aquitaine (France today) where he spent most of his time fighting other local lords, from his teenage years.
He and his brothers rebelled against their father who had to invade twice to help them fix their daddy issues; the sons were beaten and pardoned promptly.
After making up with dad, Richard was unleashed and sent back to continue fighting his father’s enemies (with whom he was an ally before); he was so ferocious in battle people started calling him a Lion. This is where his nickname came from.

Karl May (1974), the second part of Hans-Jürgen Syberberg's "German trilogy," explores the travel and adventure fantasies of the most popular German writer of the 19th century.
In Syberberg's 1970s films, Bavarian King Ludwig II, Richard Wagner, and Karl May are presented as the three poles of a utopian German dream that is disastrously reappropriated in the 1930s.
